Lyndhurst is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 10,814,[1][2] reflecting an increase of 556 (+5.4%) from the 9,948 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 1,711 (+12.0%) from the 8,527 counted in the 1990 Census.[3]
Lyndhurst was incorporated as a borough on March 6, 1894,[4] from portions of Hackensack Township.[5] The borough derives its name from Lyndhurst House (now part of The Breakers), which was built by John Stevens II and his wife Elizabeth Van Wart on a tract purchased from James Lawrence in 1792.[6][7][8][9]
The Lyndhurst Historic District encompasses much of the downtown area and includes more than 50 buildings dating from before 1800. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 15, 1978.[10]
According to Forbes magazine's 2018 list of America's richest towns and villages (the "Forbes 400"), Lyndhurst ranks No. 191 with a median household income of $246,540,[11] up 2% since 2017.[12]
