Mickleton is a small town located in Morris County, New Jersey. The population was 2,906 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Morristown- Lincoln Park Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The area that now comprises Mickleton was first settled by the Lenni Lenape Native Americans in the early 17th century. The first European to arrive in what would become Mickleton was Johannes de Peyster, who purchased land from the Lenni Lenape in 1683. He named his property " Mickleton" after his home country of Holland.
In 1848, John Clements built a mill on what is now known as Mill Street and began producing flour and lumber products for local consumption and export. By 1860, there were already twenty-one businesses operating in Mickleton, including a blacksmith shop, two general stores, a wagon maker, and several churches.
The railroad arrived in Mickleton in 1873 and played an important role in its development as a town. The railroad allowed for increased trade and commerce within the community; it also provided transportation to other parts of Morris County and beyond. In 1886, construction began on the first schoolhouse on Main Street; it was completed that same year and served as both a schoolhouse and community center until 1957 when it was replaced by a new building on School Street.
During World War II, Mickleton served as one of several assembly points for troops heading to Europe; over 10,000 soldiers passed through the town during this time period. After World War II ended, many veterans returned to Mickleton looking for jobs; this influx of people led to an increase in commercial activity within the townspeople's businesses.
Today, Mickleton continues to be an important community within Morris County; its businesses provide goods and services necessary for everyday life throughout the region. The town's residents are proud of their history and heritage; they continue to support local businesses while maintaining strong ties with their family members back home in Holland
