Newark is a city located in the U.S. state of New Jersey. As of the 2010 United States Census, the city had a population of 277,977, making it the state's most populous city after Newark, New Jersey and Jersey City, New Jersey. Newark was founded by Dutch colonists in 1666 and became an important industrial center during the 19th century. The city has since diversified into pharmaceuticals and information technology. In 2009, Forbes magazine ranked Newark as the third-best place to raise a family in America.
