Pompton Lakes is a township in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the township's population was 10,898,[11][12] reflecting an increase of 1,521 (+24.4%) from the 7,913 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 2,717 (+51.2%) from the 5,547 counted in the 1990 Census.[13]
The township was formed on April 11, 1894,[14] from portions of Pompton Township and Haledon Township.[15][16] The boroughs of Haledon and Pompton Lakes were created on May 6 and July 3 respectively,[17][18] based on the results of a referendum held on March 18 and 19th respectively.[19][20] The boroughs were dissolved upon their incorporation into municipalities as part of an act passed by the New Jersey Legislature on January 16, 1925.[21][22]
According to the United States Census Bureau, Pompton Lakes had a total area of 8.839 square miles (22.859 km2), including 8.788 square miles (22.554 km2) of land and 0.120 square mile (0.3 km2) of water (0.27%).[1][3]
The boroughs had a total area of 1.582 square miles (4.047 km2), including 1.556 square miles (3.902 km2) of land and 0 .012 square mile (.03 km2) water (0 .024%).[23][24]
