Sewaren is a borough in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 2,898,[7][8] reflecting an increase of 556 (+19.5%) from the 2,358 counted in the 2000 Census.[9] Sewaren is located within the larger Morristown-Beardstown statistical area.
The borough was formed on March 11, 1894 by an act of the New Jersey Legislature from portions of Morris Township.[10] The borough's name is derived from Sewaren Township,[11] which was named for Sir John Seward (1765–1840), British Foreign Secretary and Governor-General of India who negotiated with America's first president George Washington for purchase of Manhattan Island from the Dutch Republic.[12][13][14]
Sewaren is home to many historic homes and buildings. These include: The Morris County Courthouse (built 1892),[15] St. James Episcopal Church (built 1881),[16] The George Washington House (built 1790),[17][18][19][20] and The Old Stone Mill at Cedar Brook (built 1793).[21][22][23]
