Watrous, NM

The town's history can be traced back to 1881 when prospectors discovered gold in the area. The population grew rapidly as miners rushed to stake their claims and by 1892 there were enough people living in Watrous to form a post office. In 1907, silver was discovered near Watrous and the town quickly became known as "the Silver City of the West." By 1911, there were enough businesses operating in Watrous to form a Chamber of Commerce and by 1915 it had its own newspaper, The Silver City Miner.
