Cortland, NY

Cortland is a city in the Southern Tier of New York, United States. The population was 18,811 at the 2010 census. Cortland is the county seat of Cortland County and is located on the eastern border of Tompkins County.

The city was founded in 1786 by General Philip Schuyler as " Cortlandt" after his home town in Germany. It was renamed " Cortland" in 1812 after General George Washington's home town. The city grew rapidly due to its location on the Erie Canal and became an important commercial center for western New York. Manufacturing and agriculture have since been replaced by services and trade.

Real estate has always been an important part of Cortland's economy, with homes being among the most expensive in Tompkins County. In recent years, however, prices have moderated somewhat as new development has slowed somewhat and more people are looking to buy rather than rent property. As a result, there are still plenty of opportunities for those looking to invest in Cortland real estate or find a place to call home.
