Elmhurst is a suburb of New York City located in the western part of Queens County. The population was 106,591 at the 2010 census. Elmhurst is known for its large number of single-family homes and its proximity to Manhattan.
The history of Elmhurst can be traced back to 1686, when Dutch settlers established a farm on what is now Elmhurst Boulevard. The area began to grow in the early 1800s as a result of the arrival of Irish immigrants who worked in the local mills. By 1875, Elmhurst had become an incorporated village with a population of 2,500.
In 1917, Elmhurst became one of the first municipalities in Queens to initiate zoning regulations intended to protect residential areas from industrial development. These regulations were later extended to cover commercial areas as well. In 1945, Elmhurst was designated as a suburban community within Greater New York by Governor Thomas E. Dewey.
Today, Elmhurst remains an affluent suburb with a high concentration of single-family homes and luxury apartments. Many residents commute into Manhattan or other parts of Queens County for work. The town's economy is based largely on services such as healthcare, finance, and retailing.
