Harris, NY

Harris is a town in the Finger Lakes region of New York. The population was 9,715 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rochester metropolitan area.

The town was first settled around 1790 by a group of German immigrants who named their settlement after their home country, Hesse-Kassel. The town grew slowly until the late 19th century when it began to experience rapid growth as a result of its location on the Erie Canal and as a result of its proximity to Rochester. By 1900, Harris had reached its peak population of 2300 and by 1920 it had grown to 3400 residents. However, during the Great Depression many businesses closed down and as a result Harris' population declined to 3100 by 1940. However, since then Harris has experienced steady growth and today its population is over 9500 people.
