Hempstead, NY

Hempstead is a borough in Nassau County, New York, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 106,098. The name Hempstead is derived from a Dutch word meaning "a place where hemp is grown". Hempstead is located on Long Island's North Shore and borders the Town of Hempstead to the east and west, and Oyster Bay to the south.

The area that would become Hempstead was first settled by the Dutch in 1639 as part of their colony of New Netherland. The town grew slowly until after World War II when it began to experience rapid growth as a result of its proximity to New York City and its excellent transportation links. Today, Hempstead is one of Nassau County's most affluent communities with a median household income above $150,000.

Real estate in Hempstead consists primarily of single-family homes and townhouses. There are also a number of high-rise apartments and condominiums available for purchase or rent.
