Islip is a town in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 34,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York metropolitan area.
The Town of Islip is located on Long Island's North Shore, approximately northeast of Manhattan and northwest of Boston. The town is bordered by the Town of Brookhaven to the north and east, the Town of Smithtown to the south and west, and Southampton County to the southwest.
Islip was first settled around 1640 as part of Southampton County. In 1787 it became a separate county within New York State. The town was named for Colonel William Islip (1721-1789), an early settler who served in both the British Army and American Revolutionaries' forces. Colonel Islip had been granted land in what would become Islip by King George III in 1764 as reward for his services during Queen Anne's War (1739-1748).
In 1825, when Suffolk County was established from parts of Kings and Queens counties, Islip became its first town on Long Island outside Kings County ( Brooklyn). The town's boundaries were enlarged in 1840 and 1880; it now includes all or parts of six other towns: Brookhaven (1840), East Hampton (1880), Huntington (1888), Riverhead (1912), Southampton (1920) and Westhampton Beach (1927).
