Manhasset is a hamlet in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 10,827 at the 2010 census. It is located on Long Island's North Shore, about 8 miles (13 km) east of Great Neck and 20 miles (32 km) west of Manhattan.
The area that would become Manhasset was first settled by the Dutch in the early 17th century as part of their colony of New Netherland. The British took over the area in 1664 and renamed it Manorhaven after the Earl of Manhasset who had been instrumental in their acquisition of the territory. In 1873, Manhasset became a separate town within Nassau County.
The town's economy has traditionally been based on real estate and retail sales. Today, there are many luxury homes and estates located throughout Manhasset; however, much of its economy remains tied to its proximity to Manhattan and Long Island's other popular tourist destinations such as Huntington Beach and Jones Beach State Park.
