Morris is a town in Ulster County, New York, United States. The population was 10,839 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kingston upon Hull metropolitan area.
The town of Morris was first settled around 1785 by John and Sarah (Porter) Morris and their families. The Morris family were Quakers who had migrated from Pennsylvania to escape religious persecution. They purchased of land from the Mohawk Indians in 1785 for $1 per acre and began farming it. The town of Morris was incorporated on April 12, 1868 from portions of the towns of Kingston and Greenville.
Today, Morris is a thriving community with a rich history that can be seen throughout its many historic buildings and neighborhoods. Its downtown district features several well-preserved 19th century commercial buildings, including the former Greenville County Courthouse (now home to the Ulster County Historical Society), as well as numerous antique stores and galleries. In addition, many newer businesses have opened up in recent years, including restaurants, boutiques, art galleries and specialty shops.
One of Morris' most popular attractions is its extensive network of hiking trails that wind through both rural areas and wooded hillsides near the town's eastern border with Kingston Village. Other popular tourist destinations include Lake Ontario's Thousand Islands region (just east of Morris), Seneca Lake State Park (just south) and nearby Salamanca Springs State Park (north). Additionally, there are several golf courses within easy reach – including one located just outside downtown – as well as numerous ski resorts in close proximity to Morris via Interstate 87 or Route 28A
