Queensbury, NY

Queensbury is a borough in the town of Mount Kisco, in Westchester County, New York. The population was 10,827 at the 2010 census. Queensbury is located at 40°37′11″N 73°4′24″W.

The area that now comprises Queensbury was first settled by the Dutch in the early 17th century. The town of Mount Kisco was chartered on April 6, 1788 and named for Colonel James Knyphausen, an officer in the American Revolution who had fought at Saratoga. The first settler in what would become Queensbury was Ebenezer Kingsland, who arrived from Connecticut in 1799. He built a sawmill and gristmill on what is now known as Kingsland Avenue.

The area that would become Queensbury was initially part of the Town of Bedford (now part of Westchester County). In 1814, it became part of the newly formed Town of Mount Kisco after it separated from Bedford due to population growth. The town's name was changed to Queensbury in honor of Queen Charlotte (the wife of King George III), whose husband had been born near Edinburgh, Scotland.

In 1853, a railroad line connecting Yonkers with White Plains passed through what is now Queensbury; this spurred development along its route and led to an influx of new residents into the borough over the next several decades. This period also saw an increase in manufacturing activity; among these businesses were a cotton mill and a foundry that produced locomotives and railroad cars.

During World War II, much military activity took place in and around Queensbury; among these installations were Camp Kilmer (now Fort Tilden) and Fort DeRussy (now JFK Airport). After the war ended, many servicemen returned home and began to purchase homes in Queensbury; this trend continued throughout the 1950s and 1960s as suburbanization began to take hold across America.

Today, much of what makes up modern-day Queensbury remains unchanged from when it first came into being centuries ago: its streets are lined with historic homes dating back to colonial times; its businesses continue to produce goods that are used all over America; and its residents continue to make significant contributions both culturally and economically to their community
