Ridgewood was founded by Colonel John Stevens and named for his home town of Ridgewood, New York.

The borough is located at 40°53′N 74°02′W (40.8700°N 74.0667°W). According to the United States Census Bureau, it has a total area of 2.362 square miles (6.811 km2), all land.
