The town of Rye was first settled around 1710 by Dutch and English settlers who were attracted to its fertile soil and location on the Hudson River between New York City and Albany, New York. Rye's early economy was based on agriculture and milling; however, by the mid-19th century it had become an important transportation hub due to its location on the Erie Canal and railroads that ran through the town. In 1825, a local businessman named Jacob Leisler purchased land near what is now Main Street for development as a resort community; this became known as Leisler Park after his death in 1829. The arrival of the railroad in 1849 led to an increase in tourism and residential development in Rye; by 1870 there were 1,000 residents living in the town proper.
Today, Rye is an affluent town with a diverse economy that includes retail businesses, health care facilities, financial services firms, and technology companies. It is also home to several prestigious schools including Stony Brook University (SBU), which has a campus located within the town limits; Fordham University also has a campus located within the town limits while SUNY Purchase College maintains a satellite campus there as well..
