Suffern, NY

Suffern is a town in Rockland County, New York, United States. The population was 10,527 at the 2010 census. Suffern is located in the town of Suffern and is north of the city of New York.

The area that became Suffern was first settled around 1710 by Dutch colonists who were fleeing religious persecution in their homeland. The town was officially founded in 1788 and named for John Suffern, an Englishman who had served as a colonel in the American Revolution. Suffern's early economy was based on agriculture and milling; however, with the arrival of the railroad in 1873, it began to develop as a bedroom community for commuters working in Manhattan. Today, Suffern remains an affluent suburban community with a well-educated population.
