Tonawanda is a city located in Erie County, New York, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 41,564. The name Tonawanda is derived from the Seneca word tona-wanda meaning "where there are trees". The city was first settled around 1816 by David and Solomon Young and was originally called Youngsville. In 1825 it was renamed after the Tonawanda Creek which runs through it.

Tonawanda is known for its large number of housing developments built in the 1950s and 1960s as part of the post-war suburbanization boom. These developments have since been replaced by newer suburbs to the north and west of Tonawanda. The city has seen some recent redevelopment activity with new mixed-use projects such as One Main Place and Park Tower being developed in recent years.
