Westons Mills is a small town located in the Town of West Monroe, Monroe County, New York. The population was 1,836 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rochester metropolitan area.
The town was founded in 1798 by Nicholas Weston and his brother-in-law, Ebenezer Smith. The first settlers arrived in 1798 and built a log cabin on what is now known as "Old Weston's Mill Road". In 1802, Nicholas Weston erected a sawmill on the site of his original cabin. The mill became one of the most important industries in the town and provided jobs for many local residents. In 1811, Nicholas Weston erected a gristmill on the banks of the Genesee River near what is now known as "The Millpond". The gristmill operated until 1892.
In 1827, Nicholas Weston erected a brick factory on what is now known as "Brick Street". The factory produced bricks for local homes and businesses until it closed in 1890. In 1830, Nicholas Weston built a storehouse on what is now known as "Main Street". The storehouse served as an important trading post for local farmers and merchants. It remained open until 1939.
In 1840, Nicholas Weston erected a hotel on what is now known as "Front Street" to serve travelers arriving from Buffalo via Lake Ontario ferryboat. The hotel remained open until 1938 when it was replaced by the Westons Mills Post Office building which still stands today (it has been renovated several times over its history).
In 1850, Nicholas Weston constructed a dam across Genesee River near what is now known as "The Millpond" to power his sawmill and gristmill with water from the river. The dam remains operational today and provides power to several local businesses including Westons Mills Public Library (which opened in 1978). In 1862, Nicholas Weston built an ice house on property he owned adjacent to his hotel which served as an important source of ice for locals during cold winters months. The ice house remains operational today (it has been renovated several times over its history).
In 1865-66, John Bowne constructed a toll bridge across Genesee River near what is now known as "The Toll Bridge" which allowed traffic from Buffalo to pass through town without having to cross Lake Ontario ferryboat again. This bridge remained open until 1935 when it was replaced by Route 31A which still passes through town today (the old toll bridge can be seen just north of Route 31A near where it crosses under I-490). In 1870-71, James Averill constructed two churches - First Congregational Church (now called Saint Andrews United Methodist Church) and Second Presbyterian Church - both of which remain standing today (Saint Andrews United Methodist Church was originally built in 1868 but burned down in 1895; it was rebuilt using parts from older churches throughout Monroe County). In 1886-87, James Averill constructed two schools - East Elementary School (now called Monroe Central School) and West High School - both of which remain standing today (East Elementary School opened in 1886; West High School opened in 1888).
