Avon was platted in 1811 by John Armstrong and named for Lord Avon, an English statesman. The city was incorporated in 1816. A post office has been in operation at Avon since 1819.

The city's economy is based on retail sales, government services, and manufacturing. Major employers include the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office (6%), Kroger (5%), Honda Manufacturing of America (4%), and GE Aviation (3%).
