The city was founded in 1802 by General Moses Cleaveland on land purchased from the native Americans. It became an important center of trade and commerce due to its location on the Great Lakes Route and its proximity to Cleveland, Akron, Toledo and other midwestern cities. In 1906, Canton became the first city in America to install electric streetlights.
