The city was founded in 1810 by General James Wilkinson and named for his home county of Radnor, Wales. The first settler in the area was John Jenkins who built a cabin on what is now known as Jenkins Hill. The town grew slowly until the arrival of the railroad in 1853 which spurred its development as a manufacturing center for wagon parts and agricultural equipment. Radnor's growth continued with the establishment of several large factories including the Buckeye Manufacturing Company (now Buckeye Steel) and American Axle and Manufacturing Company (now American Axle & Manufacturing). These companies attracted new residents and businesses to Radnor which helped make it one of Delaware County's most prosperous cities.
Today, Radnor remains an important commercial center with a diverse economy that includes manufacturing, services, education and health care. Its downtown district has been designated a National Historic Landmark due to its significant architecture and history dating back to the early days of railroads in Ohio. The city also has several notable cultural attractions including two museums – The Columbus Museum of Art and The Heard Museum – as well as numerous theaters and restaurants.
