Porter is a small town located in Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pottawatomie County.

The town was founded in 1892 by J.D. Porter and named for him. It was originally a stop on the Missouri Pacific Railroad line. The first post office opened in 1893 and closed in 1904. The present post office opened in 1905 and has been operational since then.

The economy of Porter is based largely on agriculture, with some oil and gas production also occurring nearby. The town has two grocery stores, one gas station, one bank, one restaurant, two churches (one Protestant and one Catholic), one school (grades pre-kindergarten through twelve), and one library branch.
