The history of Purcell can be traced back to 1892 when the town was founded by a group of settlers who were looking for a place to live and farm. At that time, there were only a few families living in Purcell and it wasn't until 1907 that the town had its first store. In 1909, the first school was built in Purcell and it served as both a schoolhouse and a community center. By 1920, there were enough people living in Purcel to form a town council and by 1923, the town had its own post office.

Today, Purcell is still an agricultural community with many farms surrounding the town. However, since 2000, there has been an increase in commercial development in Purcell due to its close proximity to Tulsa and Oklahoma City. This growth has led to an increase in jobs and businesses in Purcel which has helped make the town more prosperous overall.
