Forest Grove, OR

Forest Grove is a city located in the Portland metropolitan area of Oregon. The population was 47,811 at the 2010 census. Forest Grove is home to the Forest Grove Civic Center, which includes a concert hall and arena. The city's economy is based on retail sales, government services, and manufacturing.

The history of Forest Grove can be traced back to 1851 when settler James McLaughlin arrived in what would become known as McLaughlinville. By 1892, the town had been renamed Forest Grove after a grove of trees near the original settlement site. The first school was built in 1898 and a post office opened two years later. In 1907, an electric streetcar line connected Forest Grove with downtown Portland.

The growth of Forest Grove during the early 20th century was due in part to its location on Highway 26, which served as a major transportation artery between Portland and Seattle during that time period. In 1916, construction began on what would become known as Mount Tabor Park, which today features an amusement park and ski resort operated by Cedar Point Resort Company LLC.

During World War II, Forest Grove became home to Camp Forrest (later renamed Fort Hood), one of several military installations established in Oregon during that time period. After the war ended, many servicemen returned home and started families; this led to increased demand for housing and contributed to the city's rapid growth during the 1950s and 1960s. In 1964, voters approved incorporation as a city; four years later it reached its current population of 47,811 residents.

Today, Forest Grove is considered one of Greater Portland's most desirable neighborhoods due to its close proximity to both downtown Portland and suburban areas such as Beaverton and Gresham.
