Central City, PA

Central City, Pennsylvania is a historic district located in the city of Philadelphia. The district is bounded by Broad Street to the north, South Street to the east, Market Street to the south and Vine Street to the west. Central City was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1976. The district has been extensively restored and renovated over the years and now features many fine examples of Victorian architecture.

The history of Central City can be traced back to 1730 when William Penn laid out what would become Philadelphia. At that time, much of what is now Central City was part of a large tract known as "The Liberties." In 1751, George Washington purchased land in what would become Central City and built his home, Mount Vernon. By 1800, Philadelphia's population had grown sufficiently that new neighborhoods were needed and Central City was annexed by the city.

During its heyday, Central City was one of Philadelphia's most fashionable neighborhoods. Its streets were lined with elegant homes built by some of Philadelphia's wealthiest families. Many of these homes remain standing today and are among the most well-preserved examples of Victorian architecture in North America.

Today, Central City remains an important part of Philadelphia's history and culture. It is home to many notable landmarks including Independence Hall (where the United States Declaration of Independence was signed), Christ Church (the oldest Protestant church in America), Franklin Institute (home to one of America's most renowned museums), Union League Club (one of Philadelphia's most prestigious clubs) and more.
