Coral, PA

Coral is a borough in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. Coral is located at 40°5′7″N 75°10′4″W / 40.083°N 75.167°W / 40.083; -75.167 (40.082700, -75.166700).

The borough of Coral was founded in 1854 and named for the coral-like rocks near the original town site on Pine Creek. The first settler in what would become Coral was John Anderton who built a cabin on Pine Creek in 1832 and operated a ferry across the creek until 1840 when he sold his property to James Moulding who erected a mill on the site that still stands today as part of the Moulding family farm complex. In 1854, James Moulding laid out streets and lots for sale and by 1860 had built a small community consisting of stores, homes and churches which he named Coral after his favorite coral reef location off the coast of Florida where he vacationed frequently with his wife Sarah Ann (née Kline) Moulding.

In 1870, Jethro Rittenhouse purchased land north of town from James Moulding and began developing what would become known as Rittenhouse Square which today includes several large homes dating back to that era including The Breakers (1870), The Grange (1872), Oakwood (1876) and Fox Hill (1902). In 1886, Jethro Rittenhouse deeded an additional parcel of land east of town to be used for public purposes including schools, parks and municipal buildings which remain in use today as part of the borough government complex which is located at 401 S 2nd Street..

During World War II, Coral became home to Camp Forrest which was one of two Army camps located within Lehigh County along with Camp Allen just south of Allentown.. During its more than fifty years of operation Camp Forrest served as home to more than 250,000 soldiers from all branches of service including members of Patton's Third Army during their historic invasion into northern France in 1944.. After World War II ended Camp Forrest was closed down and most residents were rehoused within Lehigh County while some were transferred to other parts of the country or discharged from military service and returned home to find their neighborhoods transformed into bustling military communities complete with barracks housing thousands upon thousands of men...

Today much has changed since those days when Coral was little more than a small farming community surrounded by vast forests...
