Coraopolis is a borough in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 10,812 at the 2010 census. Coraopolis is located in the Pittsburgh metropolitan area and is bordered by the city of Pittsburgh to the south and east, Baldwin to the north, McKeesport to the west, and West Mifflin to the southwest.
The borough was founded in 1868 by Irish immigrants who had come to America during the Great Famine. The community's name commemorates Countess Constance Markievicz (1868-1927), an Irish revolutionary who fought for independence from Britain. The first businesses were small grocery stores and saloons. Coraopolis quickly became a center of industry because of its excellent transportation connections: it was on one of Pittsburgh's main rail lines and had access to both rivers (the Monongahela River and Allegheny River). Factories that produced goods such as steel, automobiles, chemicals, textiles and furniture were among those that opened in Coraopolis during its early years.
Today Coraopolis is still an industrial town with many factories; however, it has also become a bedroom community for people working in downtown Pittsburgh or other parts of Allegheny County. Many new homes have been built near shopping areas and schools so that families can live close to their work places without having to commute long distances each day. There are also many condominiums available for purchase or rent in Coraopolis; this type of housing has become very popular because it allows people great flexibility in terms of where they can live and how much money they need to spend each month.
