The history of Fogelsville can be traced back to the early 1800s when settlers began to arrive in the area. The first settlement was known as "Holloway's Mills". In 1822, William Holloway purchased land near what would later become Fogelsville and began to build mills along the Lehigh River. By 1830, there were already 20 homes in Holloway's Mills and the population had grown to 50 people.
In 1853, George Wistar bought Holloway's Mill and renamed it Wistar Mills after his father-in-law. Wistar was a successful businessman who expanded his business interests into coal mining, railroads, banking, and real estate development. He also became involved in local politics and served as mayor of Fogelsville from 1865-1868.
In 1875, Wistar sold Wistar Mills to Jeptha Halsey II who continued to operate it as a cotton mill until 1901 when it was converted into an industrial plant producing textiles for export markets. Halsey Park was developed adjacent to the mill during this time period and remains one of Fogelsville's most popular attractions today.
In 1906, Jeptha Halsey III acquired Wistar Mills from his father and renamed it Halsey Manufacturing Company. The company continued to produce textiles until 1942 when it was closed due to World War II shortages . During its years of operation, Halsey Manufacturing Company employed over 1,000 people . In 1951 ,the property was sold to Bethlehem Steel Corporation which used it for manufacturing steel products until 1982 . After Bethlehem Steel ceased operations ,the property underwent several years of neglect before being purchased by developers in 2001 who have since restored much of it for use as residential housing . Today ,FogelsVILLE retains much of its historic character while offering residents modern amenities such as sidewalks , streetlights ,and public transportation .
