Hazleton, PA

Hazleton is a city located in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 21,098. Hazleton is the county seat of Luzerne County and is situated on the eastern bank of the Susquehanna River. The city has been known for its coal mining and steel production since its founding in 1855. Hazleton's economy has diversified in recent years to include health care, retail, and manufacturing.

The history of real estate in Hazleton can be traced back to 1786 when John Potter purchased a tract of land on which he built a home. Potter's tract became known as " Potter's Hill." In 1855, James Hazlewood founded Hazleton as a coal mining town and named it for his friend and political ally, James Harrisonsville (later renamed Harrisburg). The first business in Hazleton was opened by John Potter's son-in-law, George Stephenson. Coal mining was the primary industry in Hazleton during its early years; however, this changed with the development of steel production in the late 1800s. Today, there are several businesses that provide services to both residential and commercial customers in Hazleton; these include banks (including two national banks), restaurants/bars/clubs/theaters (including an opera house), stores (including a Walmart), medical facilities (including two hospitals), automobile dealerships/repair shops, and other businesses related to transportation or manufacturing.

Real estate prices vary greatly throughout Hazleton due to its location within Luzerne County as well as its proximity to major cities such as Scranton and Wilkes-Barre. Prices for single family homes range from around $50K to over $1 million; while prices for apartments range from around $100K to over $1 million+. Commercial properties can also be found at all price points; however, office space tends to be more expensive than retail space. There are currently no new construction projects underway within Hazleton; however there are several ongoing redevelopment projects that are expected to result in an increase in housing stock available within the city limits over time.
