Kittanning is a borough in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. Kittanning is located in the eastern part of the county and is bordered by East Pittsburgh to the south, McKeesport to the west, and Uniontown to the north.
The borough was founded in 1794 and named for General George Washington's stepfather-in-law Colonel James Innes. The town was laid out on land that had been donated by Innes' son-in-law William Henry Smith. Kittanning became an important coal mining center during the late 19th century; however, coal mining has since declined and today most of the borough's economy revolves around tourism and retail businesses.
Kittanning is home to several tourist attractions including Kittanning State Park (located just outside of town), which features a large lake as well as hiking trails; Fort Necessity National Battlefield (located just outside of town); and The Homestead Museum (which features exhibits about early American life). There are also several retail businesses located in Kittanning including a Walmart Supercenter as well as several small boutiques and restaurants.
