Newville, PA

Newville is a small town in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is located in the heart of Amish country and has a rich history dating back to the early 1800s.

The town was founded in 1802 by Nicholas Newville and his brother-in-law, John Miller. They named it after their home town of Newville, England. The first settlers were English Quakers who brought with them the principles of pacifism and plain living. The Amish community that now lives in Newville began arriving in the early 1900s. Today, there are approximately 300 Amish families living in the town.

Newville is located at 40°4′N 80°49′W / 40.80000°N 80.80000°W / 40.80000; -80.80000 (40.80003,-80.90002). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.2 square miles (0.5 km²), all of it land.[1]

The economy of Newville is based largely on agriculture and tourism with businesses such as restaurants and bed & breakfasts catering to visitors from around Pennsylvania and beyond who come to experience life as an Amish farmer or shop at one of the many quaint boutiques found throughout town.

There are also several churches located within walking distance from each other that serve both denominations. There are no major highways passing through or near Newville which helps to keep traffic congestion low. In addition, most residents commute to work either by car or on foot.
