The borough's name comes from its founder, Samuel Shavertown. Shavertown was founded in 1792 and incorporated as a borough in 1868. The town grew up around a mill that produced flour for the surrounding region. In the early 20th century, Shavertown became known for its furniture factories and later for its automobile production plants.
