Tunkhannock is a small town in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, located about 25 miles north of Wilkes-Barre. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census.
The town was founded in 1792 by Nicholas Tunkhannock and named for his father-in-law, Colonel James Hamilton. The first settler in the area was John Armstrong, who arrived in 1798. Tunkhannock became an important coal mining center during the late 19th century. Coal mining declined after World War II, but the town has since experienced a resurgence as a tourist destination thanks to its proximity to the Appalachian Trail and other natural attractions.
