Hampton is a city located in Hampton County, South Carolina, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 10,812. It is part of the Myrtle BeachConwayNorth Myrtle Beach metropolitan area.

The city was founded in 1786 and named for General James Hampton of South Carolina. The town was originally situated on the north bank of the Congaree River opposite its mouth at Port Royal Sound. In 1819 it moved to its present location on a bluff overlooking Hampton Creek and became an important shipping center for rice and cotton crops shipped downriver to Charleston. The railroad arrived in 1887 and stimulated growth; by 1900 Hampton had a population of 2,000.

In 1916, during World War I, Confederate General P.G.T Beauregard ordered Major General J E Johnston to move his troops from Columbia to defend Hampton against Union forces under Major General John Pope; this event is commemorated by a monument at Main Street and Second Avenue downtown. After the war ended there were many changes brought about by veterans returning home: new businesses were started; old ones expanded; homes were rebuilt or enlarged; churches were built or remodeled; civic organizations formed; schools opened or enlarged their programs; and neighborhoods changed as people moved into new homes or left them for newer developments farther away from downtown.

In more recent years development has slowed as people have moved away from coastal areas in search of better economic opportunities elsewhere but there has been some redevelopment along Uptown Boulevard which runs through the center of town parallel to Interstate 95: this includes new restaurants, shops and apartments as well as restoration work on several historic buildings including City Hall (built in 1902) which now houses offices for several local government agencies including police department headquarters). There are also plans underway to redevelop much of what used to be known as "The Bluffs" – an undeveloped area that stretches along both sides of Hampton Creek below Downtown – into upscale residential neighborhoods with views over the river: already some high-end condominiums have been built here overlooking Downtown while others are under construction (including one designed by Frank Gehry).

Real estate prices vary greatly throughout Hampton but most homes are priced between $100K - $300K with larger single family homes being more expensive than condos or townhomes although prices can also be lower if located close to Downtown where there is more demand and competition among buyers (and therefore higher prices). There are numerous real estate agents who can help you find what you're looking for whether you're interested in buying or selling so don't hesitate to ask around if you don't know who to turn to!
