Lake View, SC

Lake View is a city located in Lexington County, South Carolina. The population was 9,819 at the 2010 census. Lake View is part of the Columbia, SC Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The city of Lake View was founded in 1851 by James H. Hammond and his brother-in-law, John Witherspoon Hammond. The two men had purchased land near the present day town site from General Andrew Pickens and began to build a plantation on the property. In 1853 they named their new settlement Lake View after their favorite view of Lake Murray from their plantation home.

The early economy of Lake View was based largely on agriculture and cotton production. However, with the arrival of the railroad in 1881 and subsequent development of nearby Columbia, commerce began to take hold as well. Today, tourism is a major industry in Lake View with visitors coming for its natural beauty as well as its proximity to some of South Carolina's most popular tourist destinations including Greenville and Charleston.
