Lando is located in Spartanburg County and is bordered by the city of Spartanburg to the north and east, Greenville to the south, and Union County to the west. The town is situated on U.S. Highway 29 just east of Interstate 85.

The land that makes up Lando was first settled by Europeans in 1768. The community was originally known as Newberry Courthouse after Colonel John Newberry, one of the original settlers who purchased land from Cherokee Indians. In 1818, Newberry Courthouse became part of Greenville County and was renamed Lando after Count Ludovico di Vincenzo di Lando-Carignano, an Italian nobleman who served as Prime Minister of France under King Louis XVIII from 1814-1824.

In 1892, a post office was established in Lando and it remained open until it was discontinued in 1966 due to budget cuts at the federal level. Today, postal services are provided through the nearby city of Spartanburg.
