Wedgefield is a small town located in the northwestern corner of Spartanburg County, South Carolina. Wedgefield is bordered by the city of Spartanburg to the north, east, and south, and by Greenville to the west. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census.
The town was founded in 1856 as a railroad stop on the Charlotte & Northern Railroad. Wedgefield became an incorporated municipality in 1887. The town's economy is based largely on agriculture and tourism. Wedgefield is home to several wineries including Black Fox Winery, Wedgefield Vineyards, and White Oak Vineyards. The town also has a number of bed-and-breakfasts and vacation homes.
Wedgefield is home to two historic districts: Old Wedgefield (established in 1957) and New Wedgefield (established in 1978). Both districts are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Old Wedgefield district includes buildings from the late 19th century while the New Wedgefield district includes buildings from after World War II.
