The town was founded in 1802 by James and Martha Mosheim. The original settlement consisted of a few log cabins and a sawmill. In 1807, James Mosheim built the first house in what would become Mosheim. The town grew slowly at first, but began to prosper after the arrival of the railroad in 1887. Today, Mosheim is home to several antique shops, a bank, two restaurants (one of which is locally owned and operated), two churches (one Baptist and one Methodist), two schools ( Mosheim Elementary School and Williamson County High School), and several businesses including a gas station/convenience store/grocery store/liquor store.

The primary source of income for residents of Mosheim comes from sales taxes generated by businesses within the town limits as well as property taxes levied on homes and land within the town limits. In addition to this traditional form of income generation, Mosheim has also seen growth in recent years due to tourism related to its proximity to the Cumberland Mountains as well as its history as an antique shopping destination.
