Summertown is a small town located in the eastern part of Knox County, Tennessee. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It is home to the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and its medical center. The town has a rich history dating back to the early 1800s when it was known as "The Quarters". In 1848, John Sevier and his men stopped for the night on their way to battle General Zachary Taylor at the Battle of Buena Vista. They were so impressed with the area that they named their new settlement after Summertown, Scotland where Sevier had been born.
