Union City is a small town located in Williamson County, Tennessee. The population was 9,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville metropolitan area.
The city was founded in 1819 and named for the union of two towns, Uniontown and Columbia. The first settler in Union City was James Hogg. In 1827, a post office was established and it became an important stop on the Nashville- Columbia stagecoach line. The city grew rapidly as a result of its location on the Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad (later merged into the Southern Railway). By 1890, Union City had a population of over 2,000 and boasted several businesses including a cotton mill, flour mill, bank, hotel and newspaper publisher.
Union City's growth slowed after World War II but has since resumed at a steady pace due to its proximity to downtown Nashville and its many amenities including parks, shopping centers and schools. Today, Union City is home to several businesses including an insurance company headquarters as well as medical offices and retail stores. The city also has two churches - First Presbyterian Church (founded in 1854) and Christ United Methodist Church (established in 1886).
