Whitesburg, TN

Whitesburg is a small town in the Appalachian Mountains of East Tennessee. The population was just over 2,000 in the 2010 census, but it has seen a steady increase since then. Whitesburg is known for its beautiful mountain scenery and its thriving real estate market.

The town's history can be traced back to the early 1800s. In 1806, General Andrew Jackson and his troops passed through Whitesburg on their way to victory at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. The town was originally called " Jackson's Valley." After the battle, Jackson named a nearby stream " Whites Creek" after his troops' white uniforms.

In 1819, David Crockett and his party stopped in Whitesburg on their way to explore the area. Crockett later wrote about his visit in his book, "The Adventures of Kit Carson."

In 1827, Elias Boudinot founded what is now known as Lebanon University in Whitesburg. Boudinot was a leader of the Cherokee Nation who fought for American independence from Britain. He also helped establish several other schools throughout East Tennessee during this time period.

During the Civil War, Confederate forces occupied Whitesburg briefly in 1862 before being driven out by Union troops led by General Ulysses S. Grant. In 1865, Grant accepted surrender terms from Confederate General Robert E Lee at Appomattox Court House near Petersburg, Virginia - just outside of Whitesburg. This event marked the end of hostilities in America and marked an important turning point in White Sulphur Springs' history as well - it became known as "the city that won the war."

After Reconstruction ended in 1877, whites began moving into Whitesburg again en masse due to its close proximity to major cities like Nashville and Chattanooga (both only about 50 miles away) as well as its natural beauty and abundance of resources like coal and timberland . By 1900, Whitesburg had grown significantly enough that it officially became a town with a population of 1,500 people . Today , there are over 30 businesses located within downtown White Sulphur Springs , making it one of the most vibrant commercial districts in East Tennessee .
