Brownfield is a town located in Collin County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. Brownfield is known for its oil and gas industry. The town was founded in 1901 by J.D. Brown and named for his home town of Brownfield, England.
The oil and gas industry has been the mainstay of the economy of Brownfield since its inception. The first well was drilled in 1901 and production began in 1904. By 1910, there were over 100 wells producing crude oil and natural gas from the area around what is now Brownfield. In 1927, Standard Oil of California (now Chevron) acquired a controlling interest in the local wells and began developing them into one of the largest petroleum refineries in North America. Production peaked at 1 million barrels per day in 1970 but has since declined due to technological advances and competition from other sources of energy such as coal and natural gas liquids (NGLs). Today, there are only about 50 active wells producing crude oil or natural gas but production from these wells provides much-needed income to the local economy.
The decline of the oil industry has had a significant impact on the economy of Brownfield over the past several decades but it has also led to an increased focus on other economic sectors such as tourism, agriculture, manufacturing, education and healthcare services. In recent years, new businesses have begun to emerge that cater to this growing sector including restaurants, hotels and retail stores that sell products related to the oil industry such as T-shirts emblazoned with slogans like "I'm not drilling for shale – I'm drilling for history."
Despite these challenges posed by declining production levels within the oil industry, Brownfield continues to grow thanks largely to its diversified economy which includes both traditional industries as well as newer businesses that are specifically designed to capitalize on its unique resources and opportunities associated with being located near one of America's most important petroleum production regions
