Edinburg is a city located in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 102,821 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hidalgo County and the largest city in the Rio Grande Valley. Edinburg is part of the Mc AllenEdinburgMission Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The area that now comprises Edinburg was first settled by members of the Karankawa tribe in 1824. They were followed by other groups of settlers who arrived in 1836 and 1837 as part of Stephen F. Austin's attempt to create a new republic in Central America. The town was named for James Ewing, 3rd Earl of Edinborough, an early Scottish settler in Texas who donated land for its establishment.

Edinburg prospered as a center for trade on the Santa Fe Trail and as a cotton-growing center during the American Civil War; however, it declined after Reconstruction due to competition from larger cities such as Houston and Dallas. In recent decades, Edinburg has experienced significant growth as a result of its proximity to Mc Allen International Airport and its status as one of Texas' major agricultural centers; this growth has led to increased pressure on resources such as water supplies and infrastructure.

Real estate prices vary greatly throughout Edinburg due to its relative isolation from major metropolitan areas; however, most neighborhoods are relatively affordable compared to other large cities in Texas or elsewhere in the United States. As with many other areas within Texas' Rio Grande Valley region, real estate prices have been affected by factors such as low oil prices and increased illegal immigration into the country through Mexico; these factors have led some residents to call for stronger economic development policies from state government officials
