The city was founded in 1905 by George W. Hempstead and his brother-in-law, J.P. Morgan partner James Stillman Sr., who purchased a tract of land from John Dixey for $15,000 and laid out plans for what would become one of America's most exclusive suburbs. The name " Hempstead" is derived from the name of their ancestor, William Henry Harrison's son-in-law Samuel Smith Hempstead (1794–1868). The town was incorporated on April 12, 1906 with a population of 1,500 people.
