The town of Lindale was founded in 1881 by Dr. J.D. Hill and his wife, Martha Ann (née Hogg). The Hills were originally from Tennessee and had come to Texas to practice medicine. They were among the first settlers in what would later become Williamson County.
Lindale's early economy was based on agriculture and livestock ranching, but it soon became a center for antiques shopping due to its close proximity to Austin. Today, Lindale remains an important antique district with many shops concentrated along Main Street ( Texas State Highway 71). There are also several restaurants and businesses located in the downtown area.
The town of Lindale is served by the Lindale Independent School District which has two schools - Lindale Elementary School and Lindale Junior High School - as well as one high school, Lone Star High School (formerly known as Williamson High School).
