The name was changed to Tennessee Colony in 1889 after the state of Tennessee donated land for a town site. The first post office opened in 1890 with J.D. Clements as postmaster. In 1893, the railroad came to New Salem and the town began to grow rapidly; within two years it had a population of 1,000 people and six businesses. In 1907, the first school was built on Main Street (now Highway 183). In 1912, a new school was built on South Congress Avenue (now Highway 71). In 1917-1918, an electric plant was built downtown; this allowed streetlights to be installed for the first time in Tennessee Colony that year. In 1923-1924, an ice plant was built downtown; this allowed refrigeration for the first time in Tennessee Colony that year (the ice plant still operates today).
In 1925-1926 construction began on what is now known as "The Strip" - a commercial district along Highway 183 between Interstate 35W/Interstate 40/Highway 71 and South Congress Avenue (now Highway 71). This development led to increased traffic congestion on Main Street (now Highway 183) which had been designated as the main street of Tennessee Colony due to its central location within town limits; this congestion led to increased business activity along South Congress Avenue (now Highway 71), which had been designated as an alternate route into town from I-35W/I-40/Highway 71 since 1922 due to its proximity to these highways.
In 1928-1929 construction began on what is now known as "The Village" - another commercial district along North Lamar Boulevard between Interstate 35W/Interstate 40/Highway 71 and North Loop Boulevard (formerly Uvalde Road); this development led to increased traffic congestion on North Lamar Boulevard which had been designated as an alternate route into town from I-35W/I-40/Highway 71 since 1927 due to its proximity to these highways.
In 1931 construction began on what is now known as "The Promenade" - another commercial district along East Riverside Drive between Interstate 35W/Interstate 40/Highway 71and East Loop Boulevard (formerly Uvalde Road); this development led to increased traffic congestion on East Riverside Drive which had been designated as an alternate route into town from I-35W/I-40/Highway 71 since 1927 due not only its proximity but also because it served both residential areas east of IH 35W / IH 40 / Hwy 171 AND commercial areas west of IH 35W / IH 40 / Hwy 171 .
