West is located on U.S. Highway 287 and State Highway 6 near the intersection of Interstate 35E and State Highway 635. It is served by the West Independent School District which has six schools: East Middle School (6-8), East High School (9-12), North Middle School (6-7), North High School (9-12), South Middle School (6-7) and South High School (9-12).

The economy of West is based largely on agriculture with crops such as cotton, corn, wheat and sorghum grown in the area. There are also several cattle ranches and chicken farms in the area. There are also several small businesses including a grocery store, gas station/convenience store, restaurant/bar and two banks.
