Charles City is a town in Charles County, Virginia, United States. The population was 9,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Charles County.
The town was founded in 1736 by George Washington's father Augustine and named for Prince Charles of Great Britain. The town was incorporated in 1781. The first courthouse was built in 1786 and replaced by a new one in 1853.
Charles City is home to the George Washington Birthplace National Monument, which commemorates Washington's birth on February 22, 1732, at his family's plantation near present-day Mount Vernon. The monument includes a visitor center with exhibits about Washington's life and times as well as a theater that shows short films about him each day from 10:00am to 4:00pm (from April through October). Admission is free for all visitors; donations are accepted at the visitor center for preservation and upkeep of the site.
