Leesburg, Virginia is a town located in Loudoun County, Virginia. The population was 25,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington Metropolitan Area.
The town of Leesburg is located in northern Loudoun County at an elevation of 1,814 feet (553 meters). The town's boundaries are U.S. Route 50 to the north and east, State Route 705 to the south and west, and Interstate 66 to the west. Leesburg is bordered by Ashburn to the northeast and Dulles Airport to the southwest.
According to archaeological evidence from a dig conducted in 2002 by students from George Mason University's Department of Anthropology, Leesburg may have been inhabited as early as 5000 BC when Native Americans began using it for hunting grounds. In 1752, George Washington purchased land in what would become Leesburg from Lord Fairfax for use as a plantation; however construction on Mount Vernon did not begin until 1754 due to lack of workers caused by the French and Indian War. In 1871, after years of lobbying by local businessmen led by William Gannett (founder of The Washington Post), Loudoun County was created out of parts of Fairfax and Prince William counties; Leesburg became its county seat.
In 1909-1910, architect John Russell Pope designed several buildings for what would become known as "Pope's Row" on Main Street: two churches (St John's Episcopal Church and First Presbyterian Church), three commercial buildings (including Gannett's newspaper headquarters), and one residence (the home now occupied by Pope Museum director Diane Paulus). In 1926-1927 he designed another row of buildings on Main Street: two banks (First National Bank & Trust Company and Citizens Savings Bank), two hotels (the Willard Hotel & Suites and the Arlington Hotel), one department store (Gannett's flagship store), one movie theater (the Capitol Theatre), one ice cream parlor/barber shop (!?), one grocery store (!?), four residences (!?), plus an apartment building that housed employees working at Gannett's newspapers throughout Virginia ("The Village").
A large fire destroyed much of Pope's Row on January 12th 1935; fortunately most structures were insured against such disasters thanks to investments made earlier by Gannett & Co.'s president Lewis Ginter Jr.. By 1940 all but two businesses had closed down because people moved away or changed their shopping habits; however both banks continued operations until they were merged into Wachovia in 1988-1989.
Leesburg has seen steady growth since then; according to data from 2010 census figures there has been an increase in population from 25,521 residents in 2000 (+11%) up to 26,859 residents (+10%) as reported in 2014 estimates released by US Census Bureau . This growth can be attributed largely due mainly suburbanization which has resulted in more people living within commuting distance or close proximity to larger cities like Washington D C or Northern Virginia suburbs like Reston or Herndon which offer better job opportunities than rural areas like Loudoun County where many jobs still require travel outside town . Additionally many retirees have moved into Leesburg due its mild climate year round with no severe winters like those found near major cities with high crime rates . As a result there are now more restaurants , retail stores , medical facilities , schools , etc available than ever before catering specifically towards this growing population .
Real estate prices vary greatly depending on location within Leesburg but generally speaking properties located closer to downtown or along major roads command higher prices than those further away . Properties situated along I-66 typically see higher prices than those near US 50 since this highway acts as a barrier preventing traffic congestion from reaching these areas . Average asking prices for single family homes range between $230K-$350K while condominiums average around $200K-$250K although some luxury units can sell for upwards of $1 million
